HCF WW1 Commemoration at US Embassy George Marshall Center

Join Harvard France at the George C. Marshall Center For a unique World War I Centenary Commemoration honoring the courageous soldiers at Belleau Wood.

Harvard Club of France is delighted to invite you to an exclusive evening in the elegant rooms of the George C Marshall Center at Hôtel Talleyrand, on May 14, 2018, along with American Embassy representatives, to whom we are very grateful, as together we remember the centenary of the US presence in World War I.

HBS alum Jean-Michel Steg, will tell us the story of the US role in the Great War, and in particular of the impact of the Battle of Belleau Wood, where more soldiers fell than during D-Day!

Four reasons to attend this lecture followed by a cocktail:

  1. Jean-Michel Steg, who has become a military historian after thirty years in finance, will present original insights, based on his latest work which included extensive research in the Pentagon archives. La Fayette Nous Voici analyzes the legendary battle of Belleau Wood, a testimonial to the tenacity of the American Marines, and the impact of the American participation in the War.
  2. The history of Harvard University and World War I are closely intertwined. Harvard University, as the Gazette noted, “was at ground zero of a movement to prepare an American officer corps” for World War I. Harvard graduates, Pete Seeger and EE Cummings produced great literary works about the War. The Harvard Memorial Church is a monument to the many alumni who lost their lives in Europe.
  3. Thanks to Jean Michel Steg, all ticket revenues and donations to Harvard Club will be directly transferred to the Harvard France Scholarship Fund. We hope you will donate to this fund that has assisted 100+ scholars to date.
  4. This is an exceptional invitation for which we thank the American Embassy for their hospitality; the elegance of the Hôtel Talleyrand which houses the George Marshall Center and the view of the Place de la Concorde cannot be equaled.

While only the French edition of the book will have been published by May 14th, the talk will take place in English.

No registration after May 10th, 5pm, given Embassy advance security requirements.
