House Concert and Conversation with a World-Class Musician

Time traveling through music with violinist Szuhwa Wu, GSAS’03

Please join the Harvard Club of France for an interactive house concert with violinist Szuhwa Wu, GSAS’ 03, former concertmaster of the Victor Hugo Orchestra, founder and artistic director of the “Playing On The Edge” Music Festival.

Mrs. Wu’s program covers 350 years of music, ranging from 1674 to 2018, and is designed as a dialogue between pioneering compositions for solo violin and notable works by Biber, Paganini, Ysaÿe and Knox. She will be performing on both a period instrument* and a modern violin.

The audience is invited to reflect and share infinite dimensions of human emotions across hundreds of years.

Szuhwa Wu’s trans-disciplinary projects include her signature recital series that pairs historical works on period violin with recent compositions for violin and electronics. Her contemporary string quartet, Quatuor Impact, partners with leading lighting, costume designers, composers, and choreographers to create multimedia shows at the intersection of acoustic instrument and technology. She has also designed performances for the Centre Pompidou (Paris), Musée de la vie romantique (Paris), the National Theatre (Besançon), and as founder and artistic director of the “Playing On The Edge” Festival. In all her work, Szuhwa Wu challenges and expands listeners’ imaginations, inviting audiences to become immersed in new creative environments.

Noted for her “lightness, grace, and purity,”(New York Times) and the expressive authority and sensitivity of her playing, Szuhwa Wu’s performances build “a stimulating tension” (Neue Zuercher Zeitung) with a flair for the imaginative and unexpected. Equally adept in period performance and contemporary repertoire, Ms. Wu’s performance credits range from New York’s Lincoln Center and Miller Theatre, to the Paris Philharmonie, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, and the National Theater of Taipei.
